China's aviation officials are preparing to let domestic airlines hire pilots from other countries to compensate for an expected shortage of Chinese pilots.

Kyodo news reports that foreign pilots who pass exams and get China flight licenses can work for Chinese airlines, all but one of which are state owned, according to a plan by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

About 11,000 pilots now fly 770 aircraft operated by Chinese commercial airlines. The nation's major flight school, the Civil Aviation Flight University of China, can graduate 600 pilots a year maximum.

The Chinese airline industry needs 1,200 to 1,600 new pilots per year. Particularly lacking are pilots of the rank of captain.
