Wang Zhifa, executive director of China Holiday Office and deputy director of China National Tourism Administration, told local media that the China Holiday Office would soon hold a special forum on how to make the Golden Week holidays better suit the market demand and improve people's travel quality.
The Golden Week holidays are three weeks during the Lunar New Year, May 1 holiday and October 1 holiday, respectively, where businesses often close and people vacation in China. Since they were started a few years ago, there has been talk about shortening the holidays or shifting them to different times each year.
China Holiday Office conducted a survey before the National Day holiday last year and found that 50% of those respondents believed that the Golden Week holiday had improved and more than 60% of them said that they would travel during the holidays. Wang says this means that the public needs the Golden Week holiday.
Wang said that the best contribution that the Golden Week holidays have made is that they have greatly driven the domestic consumption and demand. They have also awakened people's awareness for travel.
However, tourists' travel quality has been affected due to the conflicts between demand and supply during the holiday. Wang said that they would hold special forums to discuss about how to change the holidays before making a final proposal to the State Council. No date has yet been set for these forums.
