Yanqing Badaling Special Zone officials say that in order to welcome the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, they are going to renovate and upgrade the Badaling Great Wall with a total investment of more than RMB600 million.

At present, there are eight vendor stands on the Great Wall, but all of them will be removed during the renovation. The 61 stalls near the North Gate will also be demolished and be replaced with a new square, and the old office building of Badaling Special Zone will be rebuilt into a new commercial building.

Li Shuawng, deputy director of Badaling Special Zone, says that they will also initiate a transportation hub within this year build three large parking areas there.

A noteworthy item is that the 2121-meter long 100,000 high voltage wires that currently go over the Great Wall will be buried underground for the sake of preserving the scenery and protecting the Great Wall. In addition, all the 27 toilets in the scenic spots will in the future be managed by the scenic spot management department and three new ones will be built. All of them will be open to the public for free.

The signs and monitoring facilities inside the scenic spot will be improved. In order to facilitate disabled persons' visits, barrier-free facilities and a voice guide system will be provided around the Great Wall.
