Marriott International has announced an educational partnership with the Shanghai Institute of Tourism to develop hotel talent in China.

Marriott Shanghai and Suzhou cluster hotels, including JW Marriott Hotel, Shanghai and Tomorrow Square Marriott Executive Apartments, Shanghai; Shanghai Pudong Marriott Executive Apartments; Shanghai Marriott Hotel Hongqiao; Renaissance Yangtze Shanghai Hotel; Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel; Courtyard By Marriott Shanghai; Renaissance Suzhou Hotel and the Shanghai Institute of Tourism, Shanghai Normal University recently signed a joint partnership agreement aimed at fostering and developing young students to become hoteliers of the future.

The aim is to secure a long term partnership between Marriott International and the Shanghai Institute of Tourism to develop hospitality students by incorporating a range of both theoretical and practical teaching methods into their every day curriculum. The courses will give the students an overall understanding of corporate culture and also give them a practical insight into how the Marriott organization operates.

The agreement will be effective from April 2007, and will involve both parties forming a "Marriott Class" of first year bachelor degree students currently studying hospitality management, hotel management and culinary service. The students will be grouped into the "Marriott Class" as part of the youth development program. The college will outline the course structure with a reference to each of the hotels at the beginning of each semester and the hotels will also outline a practical training agenda for the respective disciplines on yearly basis on areas such as front office, housekeeping, food and beverage and culinary service. Both parties will assign a key coordinator for each discipline. Based on the course curriculum the hotels will set up series of seminars and interactive training classes focusing on corporate culture, talent demand and career prospects within the hospitality industry as part of the course enrichment for the "Marriott Class".

In terms of the internship placement, the hotels will also provide a timeline for any upcoming large scale international events and offer long term opportunities for the students to participate in these events to gain practical experience as part of the course structure. In the corporate culture exchange area, the college will provide a bulletin board for each hotel to promote their latest developments, corporate culture tools, management philosophy, talent recruitment and information on topics such as business etiquette. The hotels will also establish a hands on familiarization program for three lecturers every year within their operations departments.

The president of Shanghai Institute of Tourism, Yang Wei-Wu, and the senior leaders from the college, together with management from the Shanghai and Suzhou Marriott cluster hotels attended the signing ceremony.
