The Beijing Tourism Administration has announced plans to reorganize the city's nearly 4000 hotels and inns and have them undertake part of reception tasks for next year's Olympic Games.

At present, there are 3981 inns and budget hotels in Beijing and they provide 174,800 rooms and 367,700 beds. However, due to a range of problems including inadequate management, poor sanitation, and low quality staff, these hotels often can't meet the ever increasing accommodation demands of tourists and the reception requirements for the 2008 Olympic Games.

BTA says from this month on it will unite with other government departments to conduct a comprehensive check on these hotels and assess them according to a quality standard and evaluation rule issued last August. Xiong Yumei, deputy director of BTA, introduced to local media that 253 of the 3981 hotels have met the stated standard for the Olympic games reception and they will try to have 1000 of them meet the set standard before the next year's Olympic games.

Apart from checking and assessing, BTA will also seek to have some of these smaller hotels acquired by large budget hotel chains like Home Inns or Jinjiang Inn.
