The year of 2007 has seen a big expansion for budget hotels in Xiamen.
Local media estimates that the city will have about 13 budget hotels by the end of this year, which will double that of the same period of last year and which will increase the total budget hotel room number from current 600-700 to about 2000. In 2006, Super 8 and Jinjiang Inn opened their hotels in Xiamen. Along with the existing Home Inn and Yi Ting Hu Jing Hotel, those two new arrivals ushered in the period of growth in the sector.
This year, Home Inn will open four new hotels in Xiamen, which will bring its total portfolio in the city to five. Jinjiang Inn also plans to open three new hotels. Super 8 is reportedly currently discussing several new hotel projects and Yi Ting Hu Jing has several of its own in the works.
A representative from Home Inn says the low threshold for investing in budget hotels and the existing budget hotels' success are the main reasons for the expansion of budget hotels in Xiamen.
In addition to developing new hotels in Xiamen, each budget hotel has also shifted their eyes to places out of the area. Jinjiang Inn will build a budget hotel in Canghai. Yi Ting Hu Jing has opened another outlet in Tong An.
