According to Chen Zhijie, director of Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association, about 70 hotels in Macao have introduced energy-saving equipment in recent years, helping Macao's hospitality industry to save about RMB2 million in fuel and electricity costs every year.
Chen has told local media that the practice is beneficial to the industry in the long run and should be promoted to more hotels. MHIA will support the local government's Environmentally Friendly Hotel Award initiative and encourage hotels to be interactive with consumers in energy saving activities. Chen believes it will take a long time to educate hotels to be environmentally friendly, for they first need to change travelers' consumption concepts.
MHTA is considering providing gifts or preferential offers to consumers who choose not to use the amenities at the hotels in an effort to train their environmental awareness.
