Following the success of its first China Summit in 2005, Tourism New Zealand has once again convened leaders of the tourism industry of New Zealand in Beijing.
Apart from the host Tourism New Zealand, 48 representatives from New Zealand Tourism Department, New Zealand Embassy in China, Immigration New Zealand, Air New Zealand, and travel agencies from both New Zealand and China attended the meeting and contributed their ideas to the future development of New Zealand tourism.
China has become an important target market for New Zealand. Tourism New Zealand will invest RMB35 million in the coming two years to promote New Zealand's tourism resource in China and popularize New Zealand as a travel destination to Chinese tourists. The average expenditure per visitor to New Zealand from China is NZ$3276.
Travel to New Zealand is expected to grow by around 10-15% per year for the next five years, though at a gradually reducing rate due to competition from other newly-approved destination status countries. China at the moment is New Zealand's sixth largest inbound market.
In addition, by the end of October, Air New Zealand will increase the Shanghai-Auckland flight capacity to five every week.
