The Hong Kong Tourism Board says it welcomes a plan to fast-track visa applications by Russian group tours coming from Mainland China.

HKTB Chairman The Hon James Tien commented that this is an important first step to tap the Russian outbound travel market.

The HKTB has identified Russia as an emerging market with high potential. Since 2004, arrivals from the country have grown by more than 30% each year (71.4% in 2004, 32.6% in 2005 and 31.3% in 2006). In 2006, Hong Kong welcomed more than 29,000 Russian visitors. Between January and May 2007, close to 14,000 Russian visitors came to the city, a further increase of 17.2% over the same period in 2006.

"The significance of the Russian market is that it is not only fast-growing, but also of high-yield potential, given that most Russian travellers belong to the high-spending and upmarket group. In the longer term, we hope the Government will give consideration to further relaxing and simplifying the visa application procedures for leisure visitors coming to Hong Kong direct from Russia," Tien said. "The convenience and flexibility will certainly stimulate Russian visitors’ interest in Hong Kong, and add on to the growth momentum of the Russian market."
