China National Tourism Administration has just delivered a general plan for tourism development for regions along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

The plan has been sent to the Qinghai Provincial and Tibet Autonomous Region's tourism departments. The plan is designed to promote the tourism development and regional cooperation in western China, particularly that of Qinghai and Tibet which have much room for growth following the recent launch of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

CNTA has been attaching much importance to the tourism development in the western part of China, a region that has also been included in the guideline of 11th Five-Year Plan of China's Tourism Development as one of the key tourism areas to receive priority in development.

The main content of the Plan includes the Importance of carrying out the Plan, the background for compiling the plan, the process of compiling the plan, and the features and characteristics of the plan. This plan is expected to play an important role in promoting the sustainable tourism development  in Qinghai and Tibet.

How many stop-offs does that train have to Tibet and how long is the journey? I heard that it goes very high and ppl have elevation sicknesses.

From Xining, the Express train stops in Golmud (Guermu) and Naqu until it arrives in Lasa. Journey time from Xining is around 25 hrs, From Beijing around 49 hrs, from Guangzhou/ Shanghai around 55 hours.
Peak is at 5200 meters above sealevel.
We did not have any problems with altitude sickness. However, oxygen is provided.
