Sandeep Bahl is the China general manager for Northwest Airlines. The company has a long history of shuttling passengers across the Pacific and is preparing for greater growth.
What is the current status of Northwest Airlines offerings in China?
In the past years we have upgraded our in-flight product. Northwest started daily flights to Guangzhou's Baiyun International airport in November 2004 and we are the only U.S. carrier servicing Guangzhou, in addition to daily flights to Beijing and Pudong.
We have a long history of serving Chinese customers and we understand the needs of our customers in China. We will continue enhance Chinese customers' travel experience.
Northwest Airlines currently transfers all of its Sino-America flights through Narita. Are you planning to launch non-stop flights between China and the United States in the near future?
Northwest flies from Beijing, Pudong and Guangzhou to seven American gateway cities via Tokyo's Narita hub, then connects to 250 cities in North America. It is the fastest way to reach cities like Honolulu, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis and Detroit. Northwest is the only U.S. carrier flying to Guangzhou, we have the most advantageous network here in China and in Japan.
Northwest applied to the United States Department of Transportation to fly a non-stop service from Detroit to Shanghai, Detroit to Beijing and Minneapolis to Shanghai this year. We are hopefully going to get additional frequencies that will assist us to fly non-stop between U.S.-China in near future.
How does Northwest Airlines collaborate with Chinese air travel agents?
Northwest Airlines uses multiple distribution channels and we work closely with our partners. Currently more than 400 travel agencies in China can issue NW's tickets and there are 6000 trained agents employed in these agencies who work very closely with NW to sell and promote our services out of China.
We launched a new version of our popular WorldAgent Direct Web site for travel agents last year. The site offers a new Internet booking engine which will provide functions and benefits to travel agencies while lowering the airline's distribution costs as it expands access to more travel agency locations.
