The Beijing government has issued an important notice of management regulations about national and international conferences and events in Beijing during the period of the upcoming Olympic games.

The new rules cover the period from August 1, 2008 to September 23, 2008 during the Olympic Games. It stipulates that both national and international conferences or events won't be approved to be held in Beijing during that period.

For the period of April 30, 2008 to July 31, 2008, Beijing will also strictly control conferences or events. For national and international conferences, or exhibitions, only those routine ones with certain schedules within this period and that have been held at least two previous times can get approval. For large expos, only those annual events with certain set schedules within this period and that have previously been held at least twice and covering at least 5000 square meters of space can be approved. However, those expos must also have local exhibitors account for 70% of their attendance.

Considering the great requirements needed next year in Beijing's meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibitions sector, local media reports that the Beijing International Convention & Exhibition Industry Association, along with the Beijing Trade Development Association, Beijing Development and Reform Office, and Beijing Tourism Administration have applied for more business opportunities with the Ministry of Commerce, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and Beijing government. As result of their efforts, more than 100 exhibitions and conventions, which had originally faced restrictions, will now be held in Beijing during these three busy months of 2008.

Those conferences, exhibitions, and events which can't be approved may choose to transfer into another cities such as Shanghai.
