According to national tourism departments, as of 2007 there are approximately 14,000 star-grade hotels in China.

In 2007, more than 65 hotels had been given five-star qualifications around the country, 30 higher than the year before. And in August 2007, three five-star hotels were formally awarded the title of Platinum Five-Star, including China World Hotel, The Portman Ritz Carlton Shanghai and Garden Hotel Guangzhou.

In the recent two years, the National Tourism Star-Grade Hotel Assessment Commission has reviewed more than 80 current five-star hotels according to relevant standards, and six hotels have been informed that they should improve their problems within a certain time limit or face losing their credentials. Among them, the Grand View Hotel Shenzhen did lose its five-star grade.

The budget hotels and green hotels also maintained their good development trends in China. The China National Tourism Administration is stipulating industrial standards for budget hotels to push their healthly development. And before the 2008 Olympic Games' arrival, CNTA with Beijing Tourism Bureau and The Organizing Committee for the Beijing Olympic Games will inspect all the Olympic licensed hotels according to the standard of green hotel in the first half year of 2008 and will cancel those that do not meet standards.
