The Chongqing Tourism Bureau announced that Chongqing will start construction on 100 rural tourism projects at a total investment of RMB10 billion.
The latest data indicates that currently China has more than 20,000 rural tourism spots around the country, which welcome over 300 million tourists and have reached more than RMB40 billion in annual tourism revenue. Rural tourism is positioned as a sunrise industry for tourism, targeting city dwellers looking for leisure, vacation, sightseeing, and entertainment options. Rural tourism spots attract tourists by their natural scenery, historic cultural landscape, national characteristics, agriculture production, countryside lifestyle, and their environment.
According to local media, Chongqing has established plans for 10 main projects including an ecological agriculture tourism area in Beibei, a tourism area in Jiangjin, and a tour resort area in Banan. Construction will commence on all these projects this year.
In order to encourage the favorable development of the rural tourism industry, Chongqing Tourism Bureau is drafting corresponding assessment standards for rural tourism spots around the city.
