The civil aviation agreement between Macau and Japan marks a breakthrough as Japan opens its sky to Macau.

Air Macau is now allowed to operate flights to any destination in Japan. The company plans to bring in several aircraft, including two Airbus A320 passenger aircraft in May or June, a third aircraft of the same type in September, and two or three more aircraft are under negotiation.

The company also plans to open four new routes from Macau to Fukuoka, Okinawa, Nagoya, and Hokkaido, respectively, very soon. There will be a daily round-trip flight on each route. Because Tokyo's airport is very busy, Air Macau will operate one daily charter flight to the city on a temporary basis. If Tokyo's airport extends its landing and takeoff times by 2010, then the company will open fixed flights to Tokyo.

Air Macau said that the number of Japanese tourists to Macau is expected to increase from current figure of 350,000 a year to 500,000.
