Li YanLi Yan works in the Purchasing Department of the Japan Center, China Merchants International Travel Co., Ltd, where she is responsible for booking hotels, ensuring dining arrangements and hotel documents management.

How do you arrange hotels and tour products for Japanese guests? What special requirements do they have?
We select three-star, four-star and five-star foreign oriented hotels for Japanese guests.

Japanese guests have relatively higher requirements for dining rooms which must be tidy, refined and not too noisy. And most of them do not like eating caraway or freshwater fish.

What are your favorite domestic hotels?
Days Hotel & Suites Beijing, King Wing Hot Spring International Hotel, Beijing International Hotel, China Resources Hotel, Hotel New Otani Chang Fu Gong, Beijing Guangxi Plaza, Beijing Rainbow Hotel, Yanxiang Hotel, Beijing.

What problems do you think the hotels currently have? What would you like to say to hotel general managers, sales and marketing personnel?
Many hotels have very poor ventilation facilities and their rooms give guests a feeling of oppression.

I wish that hotels would strictly standardize and improve the quality of service levels and employees, and strengthen the consciousness of smiling service. At present, hotels generally have one disease: that is when guests enter a hotel, it's hard for them to see a smiling face.

When booking hotels which are your favorites? What are their advantages and why are they your favorites?
My favorite is Raffles Beijing Hotel. I like its luxurious decor, its people-friendly design, and its personalized services. For example, the slippers that the hotel provides for ladies are novel, lovely to look at, and practical. There is also a smoke hood in each room — it's a nice touch and shows their awareness of potential dangers! Also their services catering for VIP guests are very popular. When VIP guests arrive, the hotel will designate top people from the sales and service departments to welcome them at the hotel entrance giving them heart felt greetings as well as some little gifts, to make the VIP guests feel happy. Because of the hotel's relatively high rates, we only book it for our luxury groups.

The five-star hotel that we usually select is Days Hotel Suite Beijing. Its decor is neat and unfussy, and the service personnel always smile, which make guests feel welcome. Its rates are suitable for our travel agency.

The four-star hotel we regularly book is the China Resources Hotel. This has been our contractual partner hotel for a long time. It is also one of best hotels with service with a smile around Beijing. Because we are a long-time client, it offers us better discounts and is especially suitable for our student groups.

China Hospitality News and its website aim at providing reports involving full aspects of Chinese tourism market and the latest industry news for domestic and international travel bookers. How do you view and assess our products?
I like the magazine's focus on a certain aspect and I wish it would source more news of the tourism industry, such as some of the smaller special scenery spots. I would like to see our Chinese citizens knowing about and visiting some good spots earlier than foreigners.
