Shanghai To Have More High-end Hotel Rooms

According to Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administrative Commission, Shanghai is expected to have 13,400 guestrooms in high-end hotels by the end of 2008.

These additional rooms plus the current 60,000, and 24,000 under construction or in the pipeline will make the number of rooms of Shanghai's high-end hotels reach a total of about 100,000 with 130,000 beds by 2010. This will meet the requirements of the 2010 World Expo.

Initial statistics indicate that there were a total of 320 star-grade hotels around Shanghai at the end of 2007, including 32 five-star, six more than 2006. In 2007, average room rates for all hotels was RMB577, RMB11 higher than the previous year. The average rate of five- and four-star hotels was RMB1,336 and RMB648 respectively with RMB71 and RMB10 decrease compared to the previous year, and their average occupancy rates were 68.4% and 63.5%.

As for hotels at lower levels, Shanghai is expected to add about 270,000 beds in low-end and budget hotels, bringing the total number to 400,000.
