According to the Shenzhen Construction Works Bureau, Shenzhen will invest RMB6 billion to expand Shenzhen Baoan International Airport.

After reclamation from the sea beside the airport is completed, a 3,600-meter-long runway, a parallel runway, a new terminal building and some supporting facilities will be built on the reclaimed area. The bureau said that this reclaimed area will cover a total of 13.23 square kilometers. The expansion project aims to handle 30 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo per year in order to meet the development requirement of Shenzhen's aviation portfolio by 2015.

Situated on a coastal plain on the east bank of Pearl River Estuary, Shenzhen Baoan International Airport is 32km from Shenzhen city, and enjoys a large clearance area for the movements of large passenger and cargo aircraft. In terms of ground transportation, Guang-Shen Expressway, Jihe Expressway and the No.107 national highway connect the airport to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai.
