John Northen takes the helm as the new General Manager of JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai and Marriott Executive Apartments at Tomorrow Square.

With an impressive resume, spanning across four continents over the past 22 years (18 with Marriott International) John is geared up to take this flagship property to new heights.

John has received numerous accolades for his outstanding performance on the European, Asian, African and North American continents. He has opened hotels in Africa, Turkey and the Caribbean and received the Marriott Hotel of the Year Award during his tenure at the Hurghada Marriott Beach Resort. He was the pre-opening General Manager for the Jordan Valley Marriott Resort and Spa and most recently the Area General Manager for Marriott International Hotels in the Kingdom of Jordan.  Throughout this period, John led his hotels to attain Marriott Awards for owners relations and service excellence in 1998, five Marriott awards in 1999 including service excellence, financial performance and associate excellence and Marketing awards in 2002 and 2003.  

Whilst John is a highly dedicated general manager, he still manages to find time to be actively involved in the community. During the past ten year period, John has filled roles ranging from Board Member of South Warwickshire Tourism and the Education Business Partnership to being one of the founder members of the Red Sea Hotel Association. He has served for two years as Vice President on the Board of the American Community School in Amman and played host to some of the world's most prestigious events including the British Masters Golf Tournament and the World Economic Forum. 

John is very excited to be in China, “I am very fortunate to have Shanghai as my first Chinese assignment.  The city is quickly becoming the hub of international culture, where I see many great opportunities for the JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai to excel.”

John and his wife Gamze have two children; Philip, aged 12 and Richie, aged 10.  He enjoys reading, skiing and all water sports.
