Shanghai is going to learn from the successful experiences of Hong Kong by focusing on Shopping Travel to attract more travelers to stay longer in the city.
Data from the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Commission shows that Shanghai has been in an inappreciable position in the eastern China trips that cover Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai, and nearly 50% of the travelers and travel groups do not stay for night in Shanghai.
The report says that one of the reasons is that Shanghai has not effectively combine commercial scenic spots with the corresponding travel products.
At present, there are some designated travel businesses, however, most of them are craftsshops and tax-free shops that are oriented towards international inbound travelers.
Experts forecast that Shanghai will receive 70 million tourists in 2010, and 58 million of them will be domestic tourists. This is why the government is pressing on making the new marketing strategy.
