Though Shanghai received 16.1% more visitors in 2005 than in 2004, the city's star-grade hotel room occupancy dropped by 3.41% compared with that of the previous year.

In 2005, Shanghai received 5.7 million inbound visitors, which accounted for one fifth of the nation's total inbound visitors. Of those, 4.45 million stayed in Shanghai for at leats one night, an increase of 15.3%.

Shanghai also received 90.12 million domestic visitors.

The occupancy rate of star-grade hotels went down in the year by 3.4% for 5-star hotels, 3.52% for 4-star hotels, 2.48% for 3-star hotels, 6.55% for two-star hotels and 1.63% for 1-star hotels.

By the end of 2005, Shanghai had 354 star-grade hotels and 3500 inns that combined could offer 270,000 rooms.
