Accor Hotels and Resort has appointed Douglas A. Barber as the General Manager of the Sofitel Jin Jiang Oriental Pudong Shanghai.
In addition to his responsibilities as General Manager, Barber will assist the operations of other Accor properties in Shanghai as General Manager Delegate. Prior to Shanghai, Barber was the General Manager of the Sofitel Ambassador Seoul in Korea.
A Canadian national, Barber is a seasoned hotelier with a wealth of experience in both Asia and North America. Having started his career over 30 years ago with the Canadian National Hotels, Barber had worked with the Hilton Hotels, Delta Hotels and Trust House Forte.
He came to Asia in 1989 and had worked as General Manager for four Regal Hotels in Hong Kong and later on as the Director of Operations for the Regal Group. In addition to his responsibilities as Director of Operations, in 1998 Barber opened the 1,100-room, ultra modern, award winning Regal Airport Hotel at Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong as its first General Manager.
Subsequently Barber joined the Century Hotels Group and ultimately Accor Hotels and Resort. He was the Vice President and General Manager of Novotel Century Hotel in Hong Kong, China and also supervised the operations of five Accor properties in Hong Kong and China. Barber was an active member of the community. He was the Chairman for the Hong Kong Airport Managers Association as well as the Chairman of the Joint Marketing Tourism Task Force and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Hotels Association. In 2001, he was honoured by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce as a nominee for their Business Achievement Award in recognition of his accomplishments.
Canadian born and educated, Barber majored in Economics at the University of Saskatchewan and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the University of Guelph.
