Shanghai's Fengxian District announced that they have built the largest artificial beach in China at the southernmost tip of Shanghai.

The beach, which is called "Bi Hai Jin Sha", has involved a total investment of more than RMB250 million. It is a part of the construction of a seashore service industry in Shanghai.

The beach occupies 790,000 square meters, including a seaside forest and 120,000 tons of sand delivered from Hainan.

The beach is scheduled to open on July 13, and it will initially accept about 5000 daily visitors. By 2009, it will be refurbished as an area combining leisure, business, fitness, exhibition and residence facilities and hold about 100,000 people each day.

The beach received part of its government financing by being part of the leisure project for the World Expo 2010.
