Yantai in Shandong Province aims to increase the number of green tourist hotels and economy hotels to promote energy saving and emission reductions.
The term "green tourist hotel" refers to a hotel that can adhere to clean production, advocate green consumption, protect the ecological environment, and use resources in a rational way. For example, such a hotel should use renewable energy and alternative energy to reduce the use of coal, gas and oil; reduce the use of disposable supplies; simplify the packaging of utilities in guest room amenities; and encourage the recycling of used items.
Currently Yantai has 21 green tourist hotels. In 2009, the city will aim to have eight more national hotels, ten more green tourist hotels and five more economy hotels. Those that want to be listed as one of the greens should pay more attention to details like toothbrushes, toothpaste, slippers, combs, small packaged bath lotion, and shampoo, collectively referred to as "the six small items." Many green hotels and economy hotels have already stopped changing bedding daily, and are starting to do the washing and changing according to guests' requirements.
