Hartmut Schaller has been appointed by Marriott Hotels International as the opening general manager for the JW Marriott Hotel and the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Hangzhou — the first two Marriott hotels in Hangzhou — which are scheduled to open by the first quarter of 2010.

A German national, he is a veteran with over 35 years of hospitality experience and has held managerial positions in a number of well-known hotels — including Marriott and Renaissance hotels in Germany, Pakistan, and Austria. His first assignment in China was as the opening general manager for the Renaissance Tianjin TEDA Hotel & Convention Centre. Prior to his arrival in Hangzhou, Schaller was the general manager of the Renaissance Yangtze Shanghai Hotel.
