
By 2020, the World Trade Organization says China will be the world's largest travel destination. But with the rise of Chinese incomes, lots of Chinese are also spending money outside of China in places like Saipan, a commonwealth in political union with the US.
Since June 2005, Jackson Yang has been the General Manager of Fiesta Resorts and Spa Saipan. Jackson previously was the General Manager of Golfer City Club in Taiwan and Executive Assistant Manager of River Garden Villas in Beijing.
In what ways do you interact with China travelers now within your business in Saipan?
Through direct charter flights from Shanghai and Guangzhou to bring Chinese tourists to the island. We also hired Chinese-speaking staff in the resort for better communication and service. We also work on direct marketing and advertisement to create awareness.
How do you see the market from China developing over the coming 5 years, and why?
From the economic point of view, China will become a place with lots of high-income individuals. Because the high velocity of the economy, people will become big spenders.
Where in China do you see most of your inbound traffic coming from? What type of volume from China do you see?
It will come from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and along the coast. The whole island is expecting the tourist increase to hit 60,000 in 2006.
How do you advertise Saipan's travel virtues to the Chinese public?
Blue sky, blue sea and white sand on the beach! We have an abundance of nature. The island has an eternal summer season. Visitors can feel and touch the Polynesian culture.
What are the attractive reasons Chinese tourists should come to Saipan? What does it have to offer that is different from other Asian travel destinations?
We have a clean beach and we are two hours away from China with two direct flights per week. We offer lots of water sports, world-class folf courses, and we have optional tours that are very reasonably priced. Most importantly, Saipan is a very safe destination.
What are the other major markets you target besides China?
We target Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Russia, and locals–other Americans.
What changes is the Fiesta Resort and Spa making to accommodate the increase in Chinese tourism?
We hired Chinese-speaking staff and all the literature in the rooms and restaurants are translated into Chinese. We also offer optional tours from Century Tours. In fact, we recently renovated our rooms and the Chinese restaurant at our hotel.
