A chartered accountant, he joined Cathay Pacific's Accounts Department in 1979, rising through the ranks to become General Manager Corporate Finance in 1994. In 1997, Tang was appointed Chief Operating Officer of freight carrier Air Hong Kong, and in February 2000 he took over as General Manager Cargo for Cathay Pacific.
